The “Ames, Totenberg” Stradivari of 1734 is the premiere instrument in the In Consortium program. The former property of the late virtuoso violinist and renowned teacher Roman Totenberg, the instrument’s story includes a saga of theft and posthumous recovery, restoration and sale to an anonymous benefactor. The outstanding Stradivari violin was made in the master’s 90th year and is considered to be one of the most representative specimens of his last years.
On behalf of the current owner of the “Ames, Totenberg,” and In Consortium, the daughters of Roman Totenberg – Amy, Jill and Nina Totenberg – made the loan award to Nathan Meltzer, a protégé and student of Li Lin and Itzhak Perlman at The Juilliard School, presenting the instrument to him at the 57th Street atelier of Rare Violins of New York.
